Unpacking The Loneliness Epidemic in Young Adults

Please note: By registering for this two-part event, you will automatically be signed up for both sessions (September 5th and September 12th). However, attendance at both sessions is not mandatory. You will earn 1 CE credit for each session you attend live, pending successful completion and assessment.



Join The Dorm and Austen Riggs Center for a two-part CE event focused on helping young adult clients build social connectedness through the lens of attachment style, and clinical interventions to reduce symptoms of loneliness including anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation. 


Part 1: Young Adults & Social Connectedness
Thursday, September 5th, 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM ET

In part one we review the rise of loneliness as a public health crisis focusing on young adults 18-30. Social connectedness will be discussed from the lens of attachment, post-pandemic culture, and psychological development. Katie Lewis, PhD will review persistent loneliness symptoms as a contributor to mental health issues such as depression and anxiety for young adults.

Part 1 Learning Objectives
  • Define loneliness and social isolation
  • Explain how culture and psychological development are key factors in healthy attachment   
  • Describe at least one way that loneliness impacts mental health 

Part 2: Therapeutic Solutions & Community Building
Thursday, September 12th, 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM ET

In part two we will explore clinical approaches to addressing concerns of loneliness and belonging in young adult populations, including the intersection of social issues such as access and barriers to care as key factors in young adults' experiences of loneliness. A moderated panel discussion featuring Erin Seery, MD, and Seth Pitman, PhD will explore developmentally based interventions for loneliness reduction.  

Part 2 Learning Objectives
  • Identify at least one clinical approach to addressing concerns of loneliness
  • Restate one fundamental factor of satisfying personal relationships 
  • Describe ways to enhance emotional connection with others 
  • Describe strategies to reduce social isolation
