Kim Dennis, MD, is a board-certified psychiatrist, eating disorders specialist and board certified in addiction medicine. She specializes in treating eating disorders, addiction, trauma, and complex co-occurring psychiatric disorders.
She is the co-founder, Chief Medical Officer, and CEO of SunCloud Health and a clinical assistant professor at the University of Illinois Chicago in the Department of Psychiatry. She obtained her medical degree from the University of Chicago, Pritzker School of Medicine, and completed her psychiatry residency training at the University of Chicago Hospitals, where she served as Chief Resident.
She is published in the areas of eating disorders, trauma and gender differences in psychopathology. She serves as a board member for Galen Mental Health, a member of NEDA’s Clinical Advisory Council, a member of the American Association of Pediatrics Eating Disorders and Obesity Workgroup, clinical advisory council for ANAD, and past co-chair of AED’s Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders SIG.
Eating Disorders and Co-Occurring Complex PTSD: Research Gaps and Clinical Challenges
This workshop explores the intersection of co-occurring eating disorders and complex PTSD, a treatment area too often overlooked due to clinical challenges and lingering research gaps. Participants will review the definitions and diagnostic criteria for PTSD, cPTSD, and dsPTSD, and examine a body of research demonstrating the prevalence of these conditions among individuals with eating disorders. Dr. Amanda Fialk is the Partner and Chief Clinical Officer at The Dorm, a young adult treatment community with locations in New York City, NY and Washington, D.C. Amanda received her master’s degree and a doctoral degree in Social Work from Wurzweiler School of Social Work where her dissertation focused on the clinical implications of countertransference in the treatment of addiction. She completed psychoanalytic training at The Institute for Contemporary Psychotherapy in New York City. Prior to joining The Dorm in 2011, Amanda was the Program Director for New York Center For Living and Flatbush Addiction Treatment Center. Amanda has specialized training in DBT, CBT, addiction and co-occurring disorders, eating disorders, family therapy, EMDR and motivational interviewing. Amanda believes that clients and their families need to be treated holistically and from a strengths-based perspective and has seen firsthand the healing power of the therapeutic alliance.
She is a member of the National Association of Social Workers and the New York Academy of Medicine and an adjunct professor at Wurzweiler School of Social Work.
